Diploma in Aromatherapy

Advanced aromatherapy techniques are included in the course including lymphatic drainage and acupressure points as well as the holistic approach. The properties of 42 essential oils are studied and the course teaches the uses of the oils to create the remarkable results they provide. Key to the course are the Case Studies undertaken by students.

This award qualifies graduates to operate their own clinic or home visiting practice. Graduates can also gain employment in Salons, Health Club, Health Farms, Spas and Liners, and various aspects of the Care Industry.

The candidate will study the theory of aromatherapy treatments as well as the chemistry of the essential oils, contraindications and safety data for each oil, and will also cover the underpinning knowledge and skills required to successfully perform an aromatherapy massage treatment.

The curriculum includes studies in:

  • History and development of aromatherapy
  • Structure and function of plants in relation to production of carrier and essential oils
  • Methods of extraction
  • Storage of oils
  • Recognizing a fake oil
  • The process of biosynthesis
  • The plant family, the botanical name, the country of origin, the effects, the uses, the safety precautions of the selected 42 oils.
  • Safe dosage and blending
  • The chemical compounds found in essential oils
  • How oils are absorbed in the body
  • How to safely and professionally perform an aromatherapy massage to the whole body.

Recommended prior learning

It is recommended that candidates should have achieved a level of education equivalent to five GCSEs at grades A*-C prior to commencing the ITEC Level 2 Diploma for Beauty Specialists. However, exemptions may be made for adult returners with experience of the work place.

Candidates need to hold the ITEC Anatomy & Physiology and Professional Conduct and Business Awareness units. These may also be taken concurrently with aromatherapy.

It is vital that candidates understand the structures they are working with whilst massaging, hence, the requirement for a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology and the importance of the professional conduct and business management sections prior to this qualification.


Applications are on a first come first served basis and are subject to availability. Course applications close on the 2nd of September.

Whilst most materials are provided for by the centre, it is recommended that the student purchase at least 2 carrier oils and 10 essential oils, this will motivate the student to incorporate aromatherapy in their everyday lives.
